Sawyer is measuring the growth of his plant. |
We started our plant unit. This science unit will be on going until the end of the school year. Students planted three brassica seeds and will get to nurture them and watch them grow. Each time we study our plants, we record data in our science journals. We record how much they've grown using centimeters and any changes. They loved when the roots started growing outside of the hole in the bottom of their cup. They thought it was pretty funny. It was really exciting when they first sprouted up and started to grow two leaves and it became even more exciting when they grew two more leaves. By the end of the unit, students will learn about what plants need to grow, photosynthesis, germination, cross pollinating, and how to harvest seeds.
First graders also learned about what is inside a seed. We grew a seed inside our desk and provided it water from a saturated paper towel. We wrapped it up and put it in a ziploc for about a week. After a week, we opened them up to see the inside of the seed. They grew a root and leaves inside. This was a nice activity to do that allowed them to see the beginning growth of a plant which usually takes place under ground in the dirt. They learned about the food inside the seed that begins the growth of the tiny plant.
