First grade learns about non standard and standard measurement. This is one of my favorite math units because the students are so excited to use rulers and because they are curious how tall, how long, and how much things weigh. When we used non standard measurement they all giggled because I told them that it would be difficult for me to carry many paper clips and unifix cubes around when I want to measure things. We introduced using inches and centimeters. This was a great time to introduce standard measurement because we will soon need to measure the height of our plants we will be growing. We also learned about measuring weight in pounds and kilograms. We learned about the measurement of cups, pints, and quarts. It was so much fun comparing different weights of objects around our classroom and the quantity that fit into the measuring cups.
