We cannot wait to share with the community the projects we've designed and created for your enjoyment...and ours too!

First and second grade also spent the afternoon baking. Second grade read the story, Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco. Students learned about sequencing of events and learned the importance of order when baking. The little girl made Thunder Cake with her grandmother to distract her from the storm. On Friday, we made Thunder Cake Cupcakes using the recipe from our textbook. They were very interesting chocolate cupcakes....the secret ingredient is tomatoes. We had a blast making them.

Thank you Mrs. Price, Miss Christina, Mrs. D'Andrea, and Mrs. Magnuson for volunteering to help with baking and our auction projects. Thank you to Mr. Smythe for helping build the second grade project for us to paint.
I love everything about February! Lots of pink, red, purple, hearts, candy, and a learning atmosphere filled with LOVE! This month we wrote about something we are in love with. Many students chose video games, friends, toys, etc! Students requirements were to pick one thing they love and write why they love it. They needed a beginning, middle, and ending to their writing. The middle of their love paper needed to include three details why they are in love with it. These turned out so fun!

Our Valentine's Day art was one of my favorites! Students did a step by step drawing of a head. For our hair, we went outside and used water colors. We used a technique of air to blow our hair wildly in the air. Then the next day students added hearts to their hair. These turned out so cute and are displayed in our hallway.
On Thursday, we celebrated our Valentine's Day with passing out our sweet valentines to our classmates and we enjoyed a yummy treat from Mrs. Muller. It's my signature strawberry ice cream float with licorice straws. I even made the kiddos heart shaped crayons from all our old classroom crayons. This is always a kiddo favorite. Thank you everyone for all the sweet valentines!
We observe their behaviors and changes in structures. It has been exciting to watch them change through the different stages of their life cycle. First and second grade especially likes to take them out and hold them.

So far, we've seen our meal worms shed their skin multiple times and a few have changed into a pupa. We are awaiting the final stage, the beetle! We cannot wait to see this transformation!
About 1/3 of our class already has the third stage of a beetle, a pupa. It was very exciting for everyone to see this stage of life for the beetle. They were amazed when they found the skin shed of the meal worm and a new form of its life cycle. I am hoping a few start changing into a beetle next week. We will continue to learn about more insects as the unit goes on and introduce new class pets to everyone.
We celebrated Catholic Schools Week with many fun events and activities. We began the week with celebrating our school by having students speak on behalf of Visitation Catholic STEM Academy at their local parish.

On Monday, students participated in a scavenger hunt around the school. As a class, they had to read clues to find a special part of a snack hidden in the school. Once we visited all the locations of the hidden snacks, students had a healthy fun snack. We took our snacks to the lunch room and played games together as a school.

On Tuesday, students had the opportunity to dress up as a famous person who embodies STEM and knowledge of service. We had some awesome dressed up students. They shared with their classes who they were dressed as and how they represent STEM and knowledge of service.

On Wednesday, we had special friends lunch day. This is always one of my favorite days because parents, grandparents, and special friends come to our school to share a special meal together. The students always love spending their lunch time with their families and they love when they join them on the playground.
On Thursday, we had cultural day. This was brought back from last year by popular demand. Visitation has so much diversity and it is neat for the students to be able to share their culture with others. Students from my class brought in a few of their favorite snacks and dishes from their culture to share with the rest of the class. We had so many amazing snacks and they ended up lasting us for days.

On Friday, we had an all school mass and honored the students for all their hard work at the end of the day with a "Minute to Win It" game. It was supposed to be staff vs. students but this year we let the kids play all the games. It was very tempting for me....I wanted to play the games so bad! The students had so much fun playing these games and the older students were very supportive to the little ones on helping them play the games.

During the week, we had an ongoing project as a school for our parents. They are the reason we go to Visitation and we wanted to thank them during Catholic Schools Week for all that they do to support our Catholic education. We made personalized letters to our parents. We thanked them for sending us to Visitation Catholic STEM Academy and shared some things we love about our school and education. As a fun art project, the whole school made decorative plates for our parents. We decorated the plates with sharpies and let them bake in the oven for 30 minutes to set the marker on them. They will make a lovely display of our Catholic faith in our homes. Thank you parents for all you do for your children!
Second grade already had some experience with this from last year but we reviewed the important parts of a letter and wrote a letter to a special friend. Students all took home an envelope and brought it back stamped and addressed to their special friend. Some students forgot stamps and we were able to go down to the office with .50 cents and buy stamps from Mrs. Margie Mykland. Thank you Mrs. Mykland for sharing your stamps with us! When all our letters were finished we waited for the mailman to visit us. I asked Mrs. Mykland to catch him while he was on his route and send him up to us. She ran down the street after him and brought him back to our classroom...again thank you Mrs. Mykland. He was so generous and full of smiles for the students. We all lined up with our letters and each student handed him their letter. We are looking forward to our special friends writing us back. Parents, please encourage your family members to write your child back and mail it to the school. We used the schools address as a return address. I cannot wait to see some letters arrive to school for first and second grade.
We are so excited to mail these out. Last year we wrote Mr. and Mrs. Pedrini (my parents) and Mrs. Pedrini wrote a letter back to every student. Then they made a surprise visit to meet everyone in person. This was a favorite memory of many of my students and they still talk about it today. It is important that children recognize any mistakes before it is turned in because it gives them a chance to understand immediately what mistakes they've made and gives them opportunity to fix it. First and second grade began their measurement unit by using non standard measurement. We measured classroom items using paperclips, unfix cubes, blocks, and base ten blocks. Students continued to ask when they would get to use their rulers and we officially started using them. We learned about standard measurement and why it is important that we have a standard measurement. We compared non standard measurements and students described how using non standard is not always accurate because the measurement tools are not always the same size. We used the standard measurement of inches to measure each student in our classrooms height. Each student got to measure another classmate. We wrote all our measurements on the white board and compared our heights to each other. This unit will continue throughout the year. Students have already begun using inches and feet to measure objects.
Thank you to all the Veteran's who have served our country and those who continue to serve our country! We appreciate all you do for us!

First and second grade discussed characteristics of Veteran's and about how they serve our country to keep citizens safe. Then we illustrated a poster of a Veteran and the characteristics we thought best represented them.
When it was time for our second class, the students were thrilled. They continued to ask Mr. and Mrs. Kellogg if they would all get to touch the materials. This time they sure did!

First and second grade was split into groups of 4-5 students to build circuits to make light bulbs turn on, music play, and spin an object. They had to connect the circuits the correct way by following directions to the plan. When each group completed their circuit they would turn it on. Some worked the first time and some groups realized they made a mistake somewhere in their design. They went back to see if they could find their mistake and rebuild it. I was amazed at how quickly the students caught on to building the circuits and their ability to problem solve. Mr.and Mrs. Kellogg were amazed too. They said our class completed the most projects of the day and couldn't believe how quickly they developed an understanding.

We are very thrilled to have this partnership with Mr. and Mrs. Kellogg. It is neat for the students to see what a real electronic engineer does and to see what Mrs. Kellogg does during her daily profession.
Every year my class has a big Halloween party. We each bring a ziploc of a yummy snack to share. We have parent volunteers who brew us our yummy snack filled with everyone's special ingredient. Even the parents loved eating the snack. It is a mixture of sweet, salty, and healthy. While the snack is being brewed, our loved ones read us fun Halloween/Fall stories. We always enjoy listening to our parents, grandparents, and cousins reading our class stories. Thank you to everyone who came to our celebration. It was a blast!
On October 30th, first and second grade received some exciting news. The students came back from recess and had a special card on their desk. They were thrilled to have something special on their desk waiting for them. I let the kids read the cards to themselves and then we read them together. The card said, "We're adding a new pumpkin to our classroom patch!" On the inside it said, "Mrs. Muller is going to be a Mummy! April 2016." One student shouted out, "I knew it!" They were all very excited. Many understood that I have a little baby in my tummy and a few thought I was going to be a mummy for Halloween. It was very cute.

For our Halloween assembly, each class had to decorate a pumpkin for a contest. We decorated our pumpkin by making it a baby. We added all our names and drawings of ourselves around the pumpkin to show that we are adding a new pumpkin to our classroom. It was a great way to share the news with the rest of the school.
We started our first class learning the difference between electronics and electrical. Students were amazed by what a circuit looked like and that they were going to be learning how to build circuits just like the ones that are in most of their toys. Marissa and Brandon got to build the dog robot for the class. The class loved watching that once it was correctly programmed, it could do many fun things. I cannot wait for them to go to their next technology class to learn more about circuits.
We have been learning in math about measurement using non-standard measurement. We discussed that we can measure the length, width, and height of anything around us. First grade chose 5 items in our classroom that they wanted to measure using unfix cubes, paper clips, blocks, links, and base ten blocks. They had such a blast going around to the different measurement stations to measure their item using their non-standard measuring tool. They learned that no matter what measuring tool they used, the outcome of which item was the longest or shortest was the same. I cannot wait until we continue learning about measurement using standard measurement.
On Thursday we began our play dough process. Students reviewed their rubrics and scoring sheets to decide if their play dough is high quality or low quality. We reviewed the ingredients that we would use to make the play dough and what measurements we decided to use. Students were very eager to get their hands on mixing these ingredients together.

At the end of the activity, about a quarter of the students made high quality play dough, a quarter made okay quality play dough, and the last half made low quality play dough. Students were shocked to see their first attempt fail. We went over the engineering design process and I explained to them that this happens often to engineers and that it doesn't stop them from trying again. We reviewed the improve step and as a class came up with some ideas of how we would improve our process. Many students came up with using less water, or more flour, or even using a different order of mixing the ingredients.

On Friday we started our activity out by discussing the changes we wanted to make in our process. We reviewed the ingredients and amounts students decided to use. As students were making their improved play dough, I saw more smiles and lots of excitement. Many came to me with a smile from ear to ear saying, "I HAVE HIGH QUALITY PLAY DOUGH!" They were so impressed by their ability to change the ingredients and process to make good play dough.

After we created our play dough, we went back to our working station to review our play dough texture and usage test rubric. Students used their rubrics to give them a final score on their improved play dough. We had a blast doing this activity and many of the students said they wanted to go home and make an even better play dough and add color to it.

Overall, we learned about the job of a chemical engineer and using the engineering design process to create something and improve it. I cannot wait to introduce the class to their next Engineering is Elementary unit. It will be fun to see them use what they learned from this process and apply it to their next challenge.
First and second grade began a new engineering unit from the our curriculum, Engineering is Elementary. Our unit is called, "A Play Dough Process." In this series of lessons students learn about chemical engineers through a story called, "Michelle's MVP Award." The little girl in the story wants to create play dough to sell as a fundraiser and her whole hokey team is going to help make it. She works with her uncle Adam to develop a process for making play dough. Through this story the students learn about uncle Adam who is a chemical engineer and what his job as a chemical engineer is. They also learn about the engineering design process and that sometimes the process doesn't always work and we have to go back and improve our process. At the end of this unit students will use what they know about solids and liquids to develop their own play dough process.

We experimented with high quality play dough today to see what good play dough feels like. Students enjoyed rolling it, building figures, and cutting out shapes. We discussed the properties of what good play dough texture is and what we expect out of the play dough we create. We also created a testing rubrics with scores 3, 2, 1. Students will use this rubric to test their play dough texture when they make it. We also decided we need to test our play dough in one more way. Students wanted to make sure they could use their play dough with a cookie cutter so, we created another rubric called the usage test. In this test students will score their play dough with at 3, 2, 1 depending on how well their play dough cut out a shape.

3 = high quality play dough
2= okay quality play dough
1 = low quality play dough

Students are very eager to begin their own journey as chemical engineers and to improve our own play dough process. This should be an exciting experiment for them!
We celebrated by reading a story about the life of Johnny Appleseed. My class all love apples so, they especially loved learning about Johnny Appleseed's life. Our focus for this read aloud was to point out the main idea of the story and the details that support our main idea. After the story, first and second grade discussed what the main idea and details of the story were. We recorded them on apples and made a drawing of Johnny Appleseed. Below are some photos of some of the classes creations.
She has been in and out of the hospital since Easter. She has gone through a few surgeries to remove cancerous tumors and gone through chemotherapy and radiation to shrink the tumors. She is only two years old and such a fighter. Last school year, my first graders (now current second graders) prayed for Emmy daily. We made cards which I delivered to the hospital and we continued to keep Emmy in our thoughts. Emmy's mom and dad gave me special bracelets for my last years class that say, Team Emmy Cole and Fear Not. Just Believe. My second grade students were so honored to receive these bracelets and wear them each day as a remembrance to pray for Emmy and her healing. I have attached a few photos of the students the day they received the bracelets and also her parents blog if you are interested in reading about their journey. Emmy's parents are such an inspiration and they continue to believe in prayer and God's healing of their precious little girl. God is great and Emmy sure is proof of that. She is fighting every day and so strong! Please continue to keep Emmy and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
This story is about a real man who was a New York street performer in the 1970's. He one day had the courage to walk a tight rope between the twin towers. Philippe Petit and some of his friends went into the towers and climbed up to the top to set up their rope. Philippe walked the rope between the towers. Once viewers from the street saw what Philippe was doing, the police showed up. They tried to get Philippe to come down. He danced, ran, knelt, and walked back and forth on the rope for almost an hour before he let the police catch him. After this insident the judge sentenced him to perform in parks for kids. At the end of the story it shows a picture of New York City with out the towers. It shows that the towers are no longer there because of the 9/11 accident.

First and second grade felt very sad for all the victims of 9/11. We discussed this tragic event that happened to our country on this very sad morning. We talked about all the people who helped after the accident, those that lost their lives to the tragic accident, and about heroism.

During writing and art, we wrote about what we thought a hero is. Each student made an American flag to show their pride of their country, made the twin towers as they used to stand, and glued their writing about a hero to it. It made a beautiful display in our hallway to share with the school and community about the hero's that surround us each day. It also was a memorial to those that lost their lives or were injured in the 9/11 accident. We will forever remember!
We finished the last day of school with many fun activities. The fun-tastic first grade walked into the classroom with excitement today. They read the whiteboard and saw the balloons and knew I had something fun to finish the year out with.

After Mass we had our last recess and then came back to our classroom. We sorted through some of our last papers and students finished their letters to next years first grade students. They wrote their favorite memories in my class and what the new first graders can expect to do in my class. The letters were so sweet and I know the new first graders will love hearing about all the fun things I have in store for them.
Mrs. HP brought Popsicles for all the kids. They were so thrilled and it was such a sweet treat on such a hot day. The kids loved finding a cozy spot in the park to settle down with a good book. Some of my first graders even read stories to the kindergarteners. It was so precious to see them being the expert.
All the students who participated did a fabulous job and I look forward to next years show! David wrote a song about his school and friends. Alina showcased her talents on the piano. Some of first grades friends performed a line dance with me. We practiced during recess and they had a blast learning the dance.
