We Love First Grade!

Monday, January 30, 2012

We are beginning a new reading theme. Our focus for February and March is long vowel sounds. I will continue to send home new sight word cards each week. Please practice the cards with your child each week because these words are ones that children will come across often when reading leveled texts. This weeks homework has an attachment of letter punch out cards and a tray. The children can use these to work on spelling words and/or spelling out sight word cards. From listening to the children read, I can see that many have been practicing at home :)

Last week of snowball fight!

Monday and Tuesday will be the last days of our reading snowball fight.  Please don't forget to write the date on your child's reading log so I can ensure they get the correct amount of snowballs for Monday and Tuesday. It is going to be a close fight, I see many snowballs stacked up on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade bulletin boards. I am so proud of the first grade and all the excitement of reading this month. Keep up the good work!

Tacky the Penguin

Spelling fun!

This week we practiced our spelling words for theme 4 in reading. We did a fun activity of spelling our words on our desks with shaving cream. Not only did we practice writing our spelling words but we also wrote high frequency words that I see in their everyday writing. The class had a lot of fun with this activity and it is fun way you can practice weekly spelling words at home, too.

Looks like we get a mid-winter break this week :)

Hello, students and parents....I hope you are enjoying your snow days and building lots of snowmen :) I have spent the last couple days playing in the snow with Miss Lardie, Moe (her dog), and Buckley (my dog). Miss Lardie and I sculpted a snow woman in Wright Park yesterday. Hope you all are staying warm and cozy!

Homework: If you keep a log of your reading this week M-F, I will award you with snowballs on Monday for our contest.

Fun snow activity: Use a stick to write words in the snow.

Snow day at school

On Tuesday, Miss Lardie and I combined our two classes together because we had a total of 9 students. We had a fun day filled with snow activities. We read the story, "Snow Day" and did a fun writing/art activity after. The students wrote about what activities they did in the snow over the weekend and finger painted the activities they participated in.

Spelling test results!!!

Way to go first grade! Everyone did a fabulous job on this weeks spelling test. I sure can tell you have been studying at home. Everyone either got a 100% or missed one word. I AM SO PROUD!!! Keep up the good work.

Next week we will not have new words. We will have a review spelling test that includes the spelling words from the last 3 weeks. Students will not have a spelling pretest, only their final test on Friday.

Have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

Happy Birthday Martin Luther King Jr.

This week we celebrated the wonderful things Martin Luther King Jr. did for us all.

 Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer
We honor Martin Luther King, a man who loved God very much. Dr. King dreamed of love, peace, and justice. He dreamed that we could all work together and live in peace no matter what the color of our skin. As we remember Dr. King’s birthday, we are thankful for the many things he did for our people of our country. We ask God to help us to love one another, always work together, and live in peace.
Amen.
Sticker Activity

During read aloud and snack time, I gave each child a sticker (purple or green). When each child had a sticker, I told the class that only students with green stickers could sit at the carpet area and if they had a purple sticker they had to sit in the back of the classroom. The students with purple stickers stood up and moved to the back of the room. Then, I told the class that snack was for green sticker students only and that it wasn't allowed for students with purple stickers. The purple sticker students started shouting that it wasn't fair. I continued to give snack to the green sticker students.

One purple sticker student turned to the people in his group with the same stickers and said, "I think I know what Miss Pedrini is doing....this is like the bus when black people had to sit in the back and they couldn't drink from the same water fountains...." I said he was exactly right and that today we were going to learn about what Martin Luther King Jr. did for the world. The students with purple stickers shared how they felt when they were not allowed to sit in the same spot or have snack with us. This was the perfect lesson to teach about how MLK changed the worlds view about people. We opened our lesson with the prayer above and discussed how MLK protested for equal rights, encouraged others to fight with words, the truth, and prayer. MLK said, "love is the key to the problems of the world," and that "hate cannot drive out hate." I explained that today there are still some people who are treated badly because they look different on the outside, but its what is on the inside that counts!

After our lesson, each student traced and colored their hand. Students gave me a quote about equal rights and I wrote these on their hand prints. We taped our hands on a rainbow that says, "God Loves All The Children." God created each and everyone of us to be unique and it truly is our character on the inside that matters the most!

A few of the students quotes...
"In our hearts we are the same"
"It's the character that is important, not what we look like on the outside"
"God loves all people"
"Thank you MLK for fighting for equal rights for us"
"All people deserve to be treated kind"
"We are the same on the inside"

Proud to be a first grade teacher!

I am so proud of all my first grade students today. Everyone scored 100% on their spelling test today :) Congratulations everyone!

I am also proud of all the reading students did over the course of this week. We earned 43 snowballs for our snowball fight contest with 2nd and 3rd grade. So far, THAT PUTS US IN THE LEAD!!! Outstanding job, first grade friends. Let's continue to warm up with a good book at night in our cozy reading houses!

For those that got a 100% on their pretest today, won't have to take the test on Friday. Below are some activities you can do with your child to prepare them for their Friday test.

If your child brought home their pre-test today with a note that says 100%, they will not have to take the test on Friday :)
