Baby Chicks

Last year in Kindergarten, my class had baby chicks in their classroom. They got to watch them grow, play, and nurture them until they were too big to keep in class. This year we went down to the Kindergarten classroom to see the baby chicks. We had so much fun watching them play around on the mat and holding them. Leilani and Gregorio were super excited because they were not in Mrs. HP's Kindergarten class last year. Alex has experience with baby chickens because he has some at home. We taught some of the students how to hold them and make them feel safe. The chickens would come right over to him when he called him. It was very cute to see the students being so gentle with them. Below are some fun photos from today.

Our reading is shining!

We had such a fantastic surprise at the end of the day, during our silent reading time. We got to go over to the church park and read to second grade. Each class brought their reading books over and read to a student in the opposite grade. Students were full of smiles and excitement while reading. They leaned up against tree trunks, laid on the grass, and sat on park benches as they shared their stories. We have been waiting for this sunshine all school year long and finally got a chance to soak up the sun.

We will continue to use this park as a great opportunity to learn outside during the hot days. There is plenty of shade but please do remember to send your child with sunscreen on to school for even daily play at recess. Look below to see some fun photos of our first visit to the park.

A visit from a princess...

First grade had a special visit from Miss Thurston County, Tasia. I volunteer as a board member of the Miss Thurston County Scholarship Organization which is a preliminary pageant to Miss Washington and Miss America. Tasia came to Visitation to teach a lesson to the 4/5 class on her platform, "Self Esteem." She also visited our classroom to read a fun story called, "Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots?" 1st grade generated many questions about what princesses do after having the story read to them. We asked Princess Tasia our questions and created a fun question/answer poster. Below are some of the fun photos from her visit.

Earning good behavior marbles for a Buckley visit reward!

First grade is working really hard at earning good behavior marbles. Throughout the year, the class has voted on a classroom reward when they get all their good behavior marbles in their jar. For their next class reward, they have requested that my bulldog, Buckley, comes to class to celebrate his birthday. They have till May 23rd, to earn all their marbles. I already told, Buckley that be may get to celebrate his birthday with 12 first grade friends. He is very excited and hopes everyone is exhibiting good behavior in class, specialist, and at recess.

Buckley loves to sleep!
Football is his game!
It is hard to ever take the ball away, he is a quick little runner!
I attempted to teach him how to skateboard and he didn't like it very much.

Goodbye, Omar!

Last week we said goodbye to our good friend, Omar. He moved out of state to be close to his family. We will miss him dearly! He has been here at Visitation since pre-kindergarten with the same group of students each year. The students each wrote him a goodbye message for his first grade book. It was a sad day for all of us but we wish him and his family the best of luck in the new place they call home.

Through the eyes of a student! Photos by our student photographers.

Each week we have a new student photographer. This student gets to take pictures whenever they complete work early or if there is a special activity we want documented. Each picture taken allows the student to document a memory we will never forget in first grade.
